BACKGROUND
SBNP is a community-based organization dedicated to preventing violence and promoting positive change in communities affected by gun violence. Founded by Garry Mills, a prominent figure in Philadelphia known for his achievements both on and off the basketball court, SBNP aims to provide support, resources, and opportunities for individuals impacted by violence to thrive.
WHO WE ARE
The Shoot Basketballs NOT People Program (SBNP) is a transformative youth basketball program committed to promoting positive change and building stronger communities. Our initiative focuses on using the power of sports, specifically basketball, to inspire unity, foster personal development, and create opportunities for individuals to thrive.
WHAT WE DOSBNP offers a range of programs and initiatives designed to address the root causes of violence and provide support to those affected.
Our programs include: 1. Community Outreach and Engagement: We actively engage with communities affected by gun violence, building relationships and trust to address their unique needs and challenges. 2. Violence Prevention Education: We provide educational workshops and resources to empower individuals with the knowledge and skills to resolve conflicts peacefully and avoid violence. 3. Mentoring and Leadership Development: Through our mentoring programs, we support young people in developing essential life skills, building self-confidence, and realizing their full potential as future leaders. 4. Mental Health Support Services: We offer counseling, therapy, and support groups to individuals and families affected by trauma, helping them heal and rebuild their lives. 5. Basketball and Sports Programs: We use basketball and sports as tools for positive youth development, teaching teamwork, discipline, and resilience while providing a safe and supportive environment for young people to thrive. 6. The Careers in Sports program by Shoot Basketballs Not People is a workforce development initiative aimed at guiding young individuals toward careers in the sports industry. It provides comprehensive training, mentorship, and hands-on experience to equip participants with the skills and knowledge needed for various roles within the sports sector. The program emphasizes personal growth and professional development, fostering a pathway to sustainable employment and community engagement. |

As a member of Lincoln High School’s 30-year All-Time Team and a First Team All-Public member, Garry showcased his athletic talent early on. His accolades, including the Marksward Award and All-City Honorable Mention, reflect his dedication and skill in basketball during his high school years.
Beyond his athletic prowess, Garry's contributions to the community mark him as an emerging leader and advocate for positive change. He was honored as a Wells Fargo Community Leader and received the Sixers "Heroes Among Us" Award, recognizing his commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.
Garry's impact extends beyond Philadelphia, as he was recognized as a "Be Modern" Man by Black Enterprise Magazine and named one of Philadelphia Business Journal's Top 40 Entrepreneurs under 40. His dedication to community service earned him the Verizon/AOL "Good People" award, demonstrating his commitment to improving the lives of those around him.
In 2022, Garry was awarded the Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition for the Golden Heart Award, further highlighting his dedication to humanitarian efforts. He continued to be recognized for his leadership and activism, receiving the We The People Changemaker Own It Award in 2023 and the Black Wharton Undergraduate Association Community Award in 2024.
