Statement of Need

In 2022, Philadelphia lost 516 people to gun violence—the most gun-related homicides in 30 years. Such intensifying violent activities are impacting youths, specifically minority males in the city of Philadelphia. 

In 2022, Philadelphia lost 516 people to gun violence—the most gun-related homicides in 30 years. Such intensifying violent activities are impacting youths, specifically minority males in the city of Philadelphia. Therefore, there is a need to address the physical and mental health of youth that are impacted directly and indirectly by gun violence. Also, there is a need to implement programing that reduces recidivism in youth that are currently involved in the juvenile justice systems.

The physical aspect of basketball is a fantastic way to stay active and take can be a coping mechanism for youth that have experienced trauma. Mental health is connected to gun violence in a variety of diverse ways. Being exposed to gun violence and other traumatic events in life can increase the chance of experiencing PTSD (Access Community Health Network,2018). The rising rates gun violence contributes more youth and young adults experiencing anxiety and depression (Access Community Health Network,2018). In addition, youth who experience PTSD may resort to aggressive and violent behavior which puts them at a higher risk of being prone to violence (Access Community Health Network,2018). In Philadelphia, there has been 516 homicides in 2022. The age range most impacted by gun violence are ages 18-30 which accounts for 53% of the Philadelphia population. In efforts to reduce overall gun violence in youth ages 10-16, interventions must begin at an earlier onset age.
